The 2005 Banff Municipal Census The Town of Banff's official population is 8,352. The population is made up of 6,959 permanent residents, 1,025 non-permanent residents, and 368 residents for whom permanent / non-permanent status is unknown. Highlights of the 2005 Banff municipal census are as follows: The Town's demographic profile is characterized by a proportionately small population in the 0 - 19 age group and 55 plus age group and a proportionately large population in the 20 to 54 age group, with 35% of the population in the 20-29 age group.
The results from the 2005 Banff municipal census indicate that the town has a young and active population working predominantly in the service sector, owing to Banff’s primary role “as a centre for visitors to the Park and to provide such visitors with accommodation and other goods and services” (1998 Banff Community Plan). Results from the census will help Town Council and administration develop policies and programs that reflect the demographic profile of the Town of Banff. The protocol for a municipal census differs significantly from the federal census conducted by Statistics Canada. Therefore, any comparison data from the municipal census with the federal census must be done with caution. In addition, because the Town of Banff is located in a National Park, non-permanent residents can be included in the "official population".
The above information was excerpted from the 2005 Banff Census document available on the Town of Banff website.
